members adopt an updated Code on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals that went into effect in January of 2009.
This code is to reinforce the member’s intentions that their interactions with healthcare professionals not be perceived as inappropriate by patients of the public at large.
In a nutshell, this revised code prohibits acceptance of non-educational items, such as pens, mugs, and other “reminder” objects typically adorned with a pharmaceutical company or product logo, by healthcare providers and their staff from drug reps. This also covers things like golf balls and sports bags, since they do NOT advance disease of treatment education.
BUT, promotional items are still a great way for physician practices to market themselves and create that very important “brand”.
